Climatic Impact on crops in District Badin

The marvelous crops are the pride and mean of livelihood of people district Badin's rural areas. Unfortunately, after a long crisis of water climate change has severally hit multiple crops in district Badin. It has led the multiple social and economical impacts on the lives of locals.

High temperature and Heavy rains were major factors that led base of multiple problems in district. Heavy rains severally affected the crops which led water-logging and drowned the crops. This year district Badin received 109 millimeters of rain and the failure drainage system becomes the cause to drown the lavish and green crops.

The temperature of this year was also not quite suitable for crops. It was measured 48 celsius. The local farmers of Tando Bago also observed this temperature when they saw chilly and tomatoe plants under the tree shadow were healthier than under sunlight.

The year 2019 was almost as good in terms of yield than in 2020. This year high temperatures and heavy rains were recorded, which made the trouble to survive the crops. With high-temperature crops leaves become crooked and their growth was strucked. In past years the production of tomatoes and red chilly was plenty, owing to this impact crop has reduced the it’s yeild. While rest of crops were drowned when local farmers were helpess.

That’s all led the multiple impacts on the lives of local people. Farmers become doubtful to landlords because this year was not much yield. Working farmers in fields were wet with sweat. One of the farmers said, “ This year we more paddled and used chemical ingredients  than last year but none of them benefited the crops.” One of the most affected communities was those farmers who not only lost their crops but homes in heavy rains that resulted increase in poverty on local level.

In this impact landlords also convoluted. Landlords also become doubtful to merchants, who give them chemicals, pesticides, and other accompanies to grow crops and return them on the time harvesting.

If we look out the category of the crops, tomatoes, cotton, rice, chilly is the most affected crops. Cotton and Rice was drowned, tomatoes faced high temperature while chilly crop faced both troubles.

It was quite difficult for Farmers to sensitive crops like Chilies which need a suitable climate to yield. Although some crops were Drowned due to Heavy rains, the most affected talukas were Tando Bago and Talhar, where crops including tomato, chilly, cotton, and rice were drowned. Moreover, some union councils and villages of Talukas Tando Bado faced floods due to breaches in the giant drainage canal (LBOD) Left Bank Outfall Drainage.

The reason behind not resolving the Drainag is that local journalists don’t explore and rise the aspect of the environment and aware of the people about it. Multiple oultlets published only news of affected people and crop but they didn’t deeply exploerd the issue.

Along it, authority (Sindh irrigation and drainage authority) has not paid attention to (LBOD) and other uncemented small canals in which breaches devastated the crop during heavy rains. Among them, unawareness about natural disasters like heat wave and heavy rains  also lead to not take precautions against such things.

Agriculture departments and universities should research the matter to find scientific solutions. On the other hand, the government should update the drainage systems in rural areas, and the government should also introduce heat-tolerant seeds to face high temperatures. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy we should bridle such problematic elements to make our economy more strong.
